Since we launched in 2010 we’ve offered free UK delivery on all our items. For two reasons we regret that we are now no longer able to continue to do so. Nevertheless, unlike some websites, our new shipping charges are still clear, simple and, we think, affordable.
Free UK delivery will still apply to orders over £35.00 but we will now be charging a minimal, flat £2.00 shipping charge on orders under £35.00.
The reasons for introducing the £2.00 charge on smaller orders are two-fold. Firstly, as we’re sure you’re aware, Royal Mail has recently chosen to hugely inflate the cost of postage. Because we keep our prices as low as possible and try to send out orders by First Class whenever we can, the new postage prices have made it uneconomical for us to offer free delivery on smaller orders.
Secondly, we have decided to stock some lower cost items that we really love. We think you’ll get a kick out of some of the new products we’ll soon be adding to the website. However, for many of these items, if we didn’t charge a small amount for postage we would actually be losing money on each order.
It is with great regret that we are ending our offer of free delivery on orders less than £35.00 and we didn’t come to this decision easily. We hope you’ll understand why we now have to charge a very small amount for postage on smaller orders. In all other respects we will continue to strive to offer you the best customer service and the best quality products.
The Scarlet and Jones shop is right in the heart of Pinner Village and perfectly poised to catch all the latest goings on in town. It has been quiet over the Easter break but we are beginning to get excited about the imminent opening of a new restaurant on the High Street. Carluccio’s has been a long time favourite of ours and it is set to open a delicatessen and restaurant in May. We really like the menu and are particularly impressed by the gluten free version. There are too few restaurants catering for coeliacs and Carluccio’s is one of the first chains to have offered a comprehensive gluten free menu.
We are very much looking forward to a posh fry up with pancetta, mushrooms and scrambled eggs.
We thought it was about time for an update from Scarlet and Jones Towers. Some of you may already be aware that our new shop opened its doors nearly six weeks ago. Perched on the corner of Bridge Street and Chapel Lane in the heart of Pinner Village our colourful shop has received a very warm welcome from everybody who has visited.
It was a bit of a mission to get ourselves prepared for the opening and without the help of our friends at ZipBar and the lovely Abbie of Total Personal Training we would have struggled. We also owe a huge thanks to the army of selfless family members and fabulous friends who have helped in countless ways to make it all happen.
We are delighted to have been chosen as one of the first stockists in the UK for Water Bobble’s newest family member. We have had a sneak preview of the Bobble Jug water filter for the home that is due to be launched in the States next week.
We absolutely love the water bobble and for so many reasons. The super smart water bottle filters harmful contaminants from our drinking water and it looks flippin’ awesome to boot. In saving us money on bottled water, it also stops discarded bottles ending up in landfill sites. The plastic that Bobbles are made from is recycled and recyclable. Really? Can it get any better?
We didn’t think it could, until we met Bobble Jug. Unlike your ordinary home water filter jug it doesn’t need a reservoir to hold unfiltered water because the fabulous design filters it straight from the tap. The sleek, organic shape allows it to fit neatly in the fridge door. At dinner time you can remove the filter and use the jug directly on your table. Hey presto! Still saving the planet, your pocket, your health and your street cred, the bobble filter jug is keeping the Bobble dream alive.
Unfortunately it will not be available in the UK until January 2012 and, due to high levels of demand, stock will be limited. As Bobble’s biggest fans we are really proud to able to offer the Bobble Jug, or ‘Joggle‘ as we have affectionately nicknamed it, to our customers. Pre-ordering the Bobble Jug will guarantee delivery from the first Bobble Jug shipment to arrive in from the States, due to hit our shores mid-January.
We have been up and running for almost a year now and are amazed by the tremendous feedback we have had from our customers and the press. We have just had our first mentions in two of our favourite magazines, Elle Decoration and Living Etc.
Elle Decoration featured our wooden garden swing in their August issue. Living Etc featured our Deer Head also in their August issue. We are also looking forward to seeing our light cubes on the Channel 4 television show, Cowboy Builders, in September. If you see us mentioned anywhere else in the press do please let us know.
As for our customers, we have worked hard to get your orders out really quickly and in perfect condition. On the odd occasion that we haven’t lived up to our own expectations we have done our best to put things right, and we are proud of what we have achieved. The best compliment that we could have is a repeat order and of those we have had many.
We decided not to make a nuisance of ourselves by bombarding our customers with marketing emails and we think we made the right decision. If anybody wants to keep up to date with our news or new products we want that to be a conscious decision. To that end we have set up Facebook and Twitter pages.
We have had a great year so far and have lots of ideas for new products in the coming months so be sure to like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to find out what’s coming next.
The Pantone Chair by Seletti is one of our newest products and it is available in the same fabulous colours as the Pantone Wallstore.
The 10 vibrant pantone colours lift the simple design of the folding chair and the padded seat means that comfort is not sacrificed in favour of style. We love the versatility of these fun chairs. The Pantone chair is cool enough to work as an office chair or dining chair in a modern home.
Individually these chairs are bright enough to add a splash of colour to a monochrome room or mix and match to create a vibrant colour scheme. We also love reading about the emotional cues give to each colour, it gives each chair a unique personality.
We are just loving our latest discovery, The Linen Towel. It is simply the best quality summer towel we could find. Classy in the bathroom, lightweight and quick drying for the gym and not a sand hogger at the beach it is a high-performance all-rounder.
Unlike cotton hammam towels our pure Irish linen towels do not feel wet and cling after use and they dry out really quickly. Able to hold up to 20% of its weight in water without feeling wet, The Linen Towel can also be used as a comfortable wrap, even after you have dried yourself off.
The Linen Towel is made from the finest quality 100% pure Irish linen that is naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and hypo-allergenic. Some people prefer a fluffy towel but we have been taken in by the superior powers of linen. As contact lens users it is great to dry our hands off with a lint free towel, safe in the knowledge our hands are not holding on to small pieces of towel fibre.
We have been using these towels for a couple of months and the more we wash them, the softer they become. Easy to take care of, wash up to 60 degrees and hang out to dry. They can be ironed to make them crisp for the bathroom but we quite like the rustic charm of their natural state. We use them as bath towels, beach towels, gym towels and will be throwing them in our suitcases when we head off on our travels as they take up hardly any room.
Some of the most exciting products we spotted at 100% Design during the London Design Festival were the highly original whole book prints by Spineless Classics. We’re pleased to say that we’re now stocking a range of Spineless Classics posters.
Spineless Classics take the full text of a classic book and print it on one single sheet. The layout of the text is also shaped to create beautiful works of art out of works of fiction. Where there are shapes in the design the words wrap to the edges rather than being removed or shaded so the whole book is on the print with not one word missing. We think they make a fantastically original addition to any room.
Founder Carl Pappenheim produced a poster of Persuasion by Jane Austen as a Christmas present for his mum. It was such a big hit with family and friends that he decided to set up in business. He says “enjoying a great book need not end when you turn the final page. My dream is to get people invigorated by the idea of books as great works of art and to get those who might not otherwise be exposed to them, excited anew about classic stories.”
Every word on the Spineless Classics poster prints is captured in deep black ink which will not fade. These posters feature the entire text printed in super-fine detail on lush, heavy-weight, satin finish paper using state-of-the-art printing technology. The text is necessarily small but pin-sharp and perfectly legible. The paper is non-reflective so you can hang and light them exactly as you wish.
We love this video of Karim Rashid, dressed in his trademark pink and white, discussing the merits of the Water Bobble. The Bobble water bottle is a low-cost product in relation to what he is used to working on, but you can tell from watching this video that he has put his heart and soul into the design and that he really believes in it. We do too.
Karim Rashid is one of the world’s most famous industrial designers. Incredibly successful, his work is in the permanent collections of fourteen museums worldwide. His award-winning designs include the Garbo waste can and Oh Chair for Umbra, interiors such as the Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia and the Semiramis hotel in Athens, and exhibitions for Deutsche Bank and Audi.
He has designed bikes for Biomega, furniture for Artemide and Magis, brand identity for Citibank and Hyundai, high tech products for LaCie and Samsung, and luxury goods for Veuve Clicquot, Swarovski and Kenzo.
We only launched a month ago and already we’ve been overwhelmed by your response. Our biggest seller so far has been the wonderful Bobble water bottle, which really seems to have caught your imagination.
Designed by the award winning Karim Rashid, described by Time magazine as the “most famous industrial designer in all the Americas”, the Water Bobble is a little bit of design genius. If you haven’t checked it out already, have a look. It’s good for you and good for the environment.
Demand for the lovely, puppydog shaped Waldo childrens’ night light has also been high and we’re now out of stock. Unfortunately it seems like we won’t be able to get anymore until January so we’d like to apologise if you were after one.
Sadly, we’ve also sold out of the quirky big game wooden deer head, which we love to bits. Even worse, it seems like we won’t be able to get our hands on any more! Our supplier seems to have gone AWOL, but we’re doing our best to source some as we really, really don’t like to disappoint.
So, with this first blog entry we’d like to thank all you lovely people who’ve visited our site and purchased our products. We did have plans to take it easy following the launch, take the time to develop the site a bit more and add some more products, but we’ve been rushed off our feet with the demand. Thank you.
